Today surrounded by houses, the Winser Bock windmill was built many centuries ago on a dune - the Mühlenberg - far outside the former village.
The post windmill in Winsen was built on a dune - named Mühlenberg, or Mill Hill - far outside the village borders are they were at the time. It once stood on a cleared site. Wind Law determined that the miller did not need to tolerate trees or buildings near his mill that could have obstructed the wind. There are no existing records about the first mill. The earliest references to the mill and the Winsen millers date from the 18th century.
