The horseshoe on the Stechbahn

In memory of Duke Otto ll

Legend has it that Duke Otto II fell from his horse during a jousting tournament on the Stechbahn and was killed in the process. The horseshoe embedded into the pavement acts as a reminder of this legend. The year 1471, carved in the stone, denotes the year of the Duke’s death. This memorial site was first mentioned as early as 1763.
