Where soldiers used to drill
As early as 1979, a local newspaper, the ‘Cellesche Zeitung’, wrote that the citizens of Celle “hoped that with long-term town planning, these barracks would one day be demolished and a modern administrative centre built within the wildlife garden”.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the military blocs and their threat potential became obsolete. The heath barracks were no longer needed by the British forces.
Historical records demonstrate the difficult transformation of a traditional military building to its peaceful use as the location for Celle’s New Town Hall.
